Lake Como

From Zurich, we took the train up to Lake Como and if anyone is planning to inter rail or travel around Italy, I throughly recommend this journey! The views were spectacular, I actually wanted to stop off at every stop and explore the surrounding area. Unfortunately I couldn't. Anyway we arrive in the town of Como and head up to our hotel.

And the views from the hotel room did not disappoint either! First thing we did was jump in the shower because Italy in mid-august, it's pretty hard not to travel and not feel dirty. Feeling nice and refreshed, we decided to wander round and check everything out.

First thing we see is an ice-cream shop and who's gonna say no to ice cream when it's standing right in front of you? Needless to say we went for some.

I had a cone with two chocolate scoops and one lemon and wow that was one hell of a good ice-cream. It's actually recommended on trip advisor and at that time it wasn't full but later on when we were walking back from dinner, the queue looked a bit like this.

Contented with our ice-cream, we strolled along the lake and along some of the trees there were these water sprayers that you walked through and cooled you down. They didn't get you wet it just refreshed you and in the heat it was certainly was pleasant.

As in most towns, there was a memorial to those who had died during the second world war. It was not a typical statue, it was bronze plates that were inscribed.

If you're looking for just a beach holiday, do not stay in the town of como as this was pretty much the extent of the beach. You can take boats out to different towns and there are places to sunbathe and swim but if it's just that you're looking for I wouldn't recommend the town.

After having surveyed the path along the river, we decided to head back to the hotel, have a quick rest and then explore the old town when going for dinner.

More views from our window.

Walking through the town before dinner, I did not know what to think, it wasn't the most beautiful town I had been to but I did enjoy the little alleyways.

We found a place to eat at a piazza, the atmosphere was lovely with buskers playing music and everyone enjoying themselves.

I went for a Caprese as starter.

and a regular Spaghetti Bolognese. (Boring I know!)

It was a beautiful relaxing first day and of course the best thing in Italy: the food! Everything I ate was molto buono!
